In May 2018 workers at Jasic Technology, a listed welding equipment maker in Pingshan, Shenzhen, began campaigning for a workplace union to press grievances over overtime pay, fines and working conditions. In mid-July 2018 leading activists were dismissed and beaten by company security guards. On 27 July 2018 thirty workers and supporters were detained by police in Pingshan District, and a further fifteen supporters who went to the police station were taken away on 30 July 2018. The case drew student solidarity groups from universities across China and became the best-known Chinese labour dispute of 2018, and it ended in defeat for the union campaign.

Outcome
Lost – The union demand was refused; the activists were dismissed, beaten and detained. China Labor Watch records 30 workers and supporters held on 27 July 2018 and 15 more on 30 July 2018, and Human Rights Watch documents a nationwide crackdown on labour and student activists from mid-2018. The 89 figure counts the workers who signed the union demand, not the whole workforce. No settlement on wages, overtime or the union is recorded, and prosecutions continued into 2019.
