On 22 January 2004 Chea Vichea, president of the Free Trade Union of Workers of the Kingdom of Cambodia (FTUWKC), which organises garment workers, was shot in the head and chest while reading a newspaper at a kiosk in Phnom Penh and died at the scene. Three days later thousands of Cambodians, many of them clothing factory workers, joined a funeral march from the union headquarters to the cremation site, calling him a workers' hero. The BBC described the death as the latest in a series of suspected political killings apparently targeting government critics; the Clean Clothes Campaign and the ICFTU condemned the killing and demanded an investigation.
