View on map Part of: Bangladesh garment minimum wage strike, November 2023
Garment workers in Bangladesh's industrial belts struck and demonstrated through the last days of October and the first week of November 2023 for a near-tripling of the monthly minimum wage. On 4 November around 10,000 workers at Ashulia tried to prevent colleagues from returning to work as factories reopened; police fired tear gas and rubber bullets, a woman was critically injured at Sreepur, police said about 300 factories had been shut during the week-long protests, and 1,500 security personnel were deployed in Ashulia and Savar. Two more workers died in Gazipur on 8 November. The government announced a 56.25 per cent minimum wage rise to 12,500 taka from 1 December, which workers' organisations rejected.
