At least 30,000 workers at around 41 maquiladora plants in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, went on strike on 25 January 2019 after negotiations failed, demanding a 20 percent wage increase and a one-off 32,000 peso annual bonus. The walkout followed partial closures across about 45 plants from 12 January and led to 20 percent raises and bonuses at almost all of the 48 plants involved, although some companies closed or left the city.
- Workers involved
- 30,000 (estimated)
- Outcome
- Partial – Scale is disputed: Mexico News Daily reports at least 30,000 workers at 41 factories, the Associated Press reports 25,000 at the strike's height, and other outlets reported up to 70,000, so 30000 is an estimate. On the end date, the Associated Press reported 44 of 48 plants settled by 5 February 2019 and total victory on 11 February 2019, while The Guardian on 17 February 2019 still described strikes closing or slowing dozens of plants.
