Workers at the Shangri-La Hotel in Jakarta had been on strike since 22 December 2000 and were considering a lawsuit against management for ignoring their right of association, their lawyer Surya Tjandra of the Jakarta Legal Institute said on 15 January 2001. The management had prevented workers from establishing an independent union (SPMS), suspended the union's leader Halilintar Nurdin, dismissed 420 SPMS members for taking part in the strike and offered striking workers re-employment in exchange for leaving the union. In November 2001 the South Jakarta State Court ordered seven SPMS organisers to pay Rp 20.7 billion in compensation for the hotel's three-month closure.
