From 4 June 2011 workers at Maruti Suzuki India's Manesar plant staged a sit-in strike demanding recognition of the Maruti Suzuki Employees Union (MSEU), the reinstatement of 11 sacked activists and regularisation of trainees and contract workers, and protesting the intensification of work. Management dismissed 11 workers including MSEU office bearers on 6 June, the Haryana government banned the strike and referred the dispute to the labour court, and unions across the Gurgaon-Manesar belt held a solidarity tool-down. The strike ended early on 17 June 2011 with an agreement signed in the presence of the Haryana labour minister.

Workers involved
3,000 (estimated)
Outcome
Partial – Under the agreement brokered by the Haryana government on 16-17 June 2011 the 11 dismissed workers were reinstated pending a domestic inquiry and the new union's registration application was to be processed, but the workers conceded 'no work no pay' for the strike days and gave up the demand for a second union at the plant (The Hindu). Worker counts differ: IndustriALL reports 3,000 workers on sit-in strike, Business Today reports about 2,000.
