Haken-mura New Year tent village, Tokyo, 2008-2009
Activists and unionists opened a tent village for laid-off dispatch workers in Hibiya Park, Tokyo, from 31 December 2008 to 5 January 2009 to press the government over the sudden job losses caused by the downturn. More than 500 unemployed and homeless workers used the camp, and the labour ministry opened its building opposite the park on 2 January 2009.
